Sciatica is the term used to describe the symptoms of leg pain, sometimes accompanied by tingling, numbness and/or weakness, that arise from disruption or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is not a medical diagnosis, but rather a symptom of an underlying medical condition.
What are the symptoms of sciatica?
Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg (rarely in both legs)
Pain that is worse when sitting
Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or searing (versus a dull ache)
Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes
A sharp pain that may make it difficult to stand up or walk
Pain that radiates down the leg and possibly into the foot and toes (it rarely occurs only in the foot)
How does sciatica cause my pain?
Each individual nerve in the lower back provides sensation and strength in. different part of the legs. The Sciatic nerve originates from nerve roots of L4 to S3 in the lower back, that combine to form the Sciatic nerve, the largest single nerve in the body. Sciatica occurs when the Sciatic nerve is compressed at, or near its origin. Compression of the nerve may occur for a number of reasons, including disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis. Sciatica-like symptoms may also occur as the result of muscle tightness in the buttock region, a condition known as Piriformis Syndrome. While this is not true Sciatica, the symptoms can mimic that of true Sciatica. This is not an exhaustive list, but your Physiotherapist will be able to diagnose the cause of your symptoms. The specific location of Sciatica symptoms depends on where the nerve is compressed.
How do I know I know what is causing my Sciatica?
A thorough assessment performed by your Physiotherapist is the best way to diagnose the cause of your sciatica. They will be able to guide on any extra investigations required and on the optimal treatment plan.
What should I avoid to help my Sciatica?
Avoid sitting for longer than absolutely necessary.
Avoid sitting with slumped posture, or bending down to pick things up using a stoop lift.
Start Physiotherapy care as soon as possible
Avoid excessive pain medications as they will only mask the symptoms

Home care Packages can be used for a range of services including Allied health (Physiotherapy), social services, gardening, cleaning, transport, personal care, respite care and more. Home Care Packages are divided into four funding levels. The higher the level, the more care hours are included. These are:
Level 1: 6.8 hours per week
Level 2: 12.6 hours per week
Level 3: 21.4 hours per week
Level 4: 27.5 hours per week
The funding level is determined based on an assessment of the patient’s condition and living circumstances. An assigned assessor will work with the client and their family to understand their needs and determine the most appropriate Home Care Package for them. The hours included in each level can be divided between the above mentioned services. Typically, a person will coordinate their care plan with their home care package provider and their needs.
Home Care Package Assessment
The first step in obtaining funding for a Homecare Package is to register at My Aged Care and complete an initial application here: https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/assessment/apply-online. Once completed, MyAgedCare will contact the applicant to discuss further. Next, an in-home assessment will be scheduled by the aged-care assessment team from the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) service. The assessor will schedule time to visit the patient’s home and complete an assessment to determine whether or not a Home Care Package is an option and, if it is, what package level best meets the support needs of that individual. After the assessment, My Aged Care will send a letter to the patient to notify them if they are eligible for a Home Care Package and what level of funding they’ve been approved for. They will then be placed on a waitlist and will be notified once the package becomes activated. Waitlists can be variable as they are prioritised based on needs. Typically, a person will then choose a Home Care Package provider who will assist to organise their supports.

Can Cyclists lodge a CTP Claim?
CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance is a type of insurance that provides coverage for personal injury claims arising from a motor vehicle. This includes cars, trucs, motor bikes, cyclists and pedestrian accidents. Essentially any accident caused due to a motor vehicle is covered under a CTP Claim.
Cyclists can lodge a CTP claim if they are injured in an accident involving a motor vehicle. If you’ve been injured on your bike through being hit from behind, a driver failing to give way, a close pass, or dooring, it’s likely you can lodge a CTP claim.
Knocked off your bike:
This is the most common scenario for cyclists. A driver was too close to the bike and caused them to get knocked off their bike, resulting in an injury. You should lodge a CTP claim for personal injury benefits as soon as you can. This will allow for lost wages and essential medical treatment under the CTP claim to start sooner rather than later.
Knocked off your bike in a hit and run:
If you’ve been knocked off your bike in a hit-and-run accident in NSW, where the driver failed to stop and can’t be traced, you may still be able to claim bike accident compensation. The NSW CTP scheme allows you to apply for compensation from the ‘Nominal Defendant’ where the at-fault vehicle can’t be identified.
When can you lodge a CTP Claim for a bike accident?
In NSW, it’s likely you can lodge a CTP claim if you meet the following two conditions:
There was a car or another vehicle involved in your cycling accident
You’ve had time off work to recover, been admitted to hospital, or incurred any medical or treatment expenses due to the accident
The NSW CTP scheme is a no fault scheme. Even if you were at fault or partly at fault, you may still be able to lodge a CTP claim and receive essential treatment.
Common cycling accident injuries that qualify for a CTP claims:
Broken collar bone or separated shoulder
Fractures
Broken or bruised ribs
Cuts and abrasions
Head or brain injury
Threshold Injuries
Your injuries will be classified as ‘threshold’ or ‘above threshold’, and this classification will determine how your claim is assessed.
Threshold injuries are less serious cycling accident injuries like bruising, cuts, and abrasions, but not fractures. Threshold injuries include musculoskeletal conditions such as general muscular pains due to the accident.
Above-threshold injuries are more serious cycling injuries which include fractures, head or brain injuries, or injuries that require surgery.
How do I claim my full cycling accident compensation entitlements?
Report the accident to the police. This is important, as you’ll need a police event number to claim your entitlements. This can also depend on the insurer, not all insurance companies will require you to provide a police event number.
You’ll need details of the vehicle involved to identify the CTP insurer. However, you can still lodge a CTP claim provided you have other evidence to substantiate your claim.
Keep records of any witnesses and photos of the accident scene. Helmet or bike camera footage can be especially helpful with cycling accident claims.
See your GP and get a full medical assessment. Even if you don’t need to go to hospital, it’s important to get a medical assessment as some injuries can worsen over time, and if your injuries do worsen you might need time off work or further treatment. It’s paramount your GP lists all of your symptoms on your medical certificate, regardless of how minor the symptom may be. Symptoms can worsen days or even weeks after the accident.
If you need any time off work or treatment, submit an ‘application for personal injury benefits’. This will allow you to receive 80-95% of your lost wages, covered by the CTP claim.
It’s important to submit your claim within 28 days of the accident to be eligible for your lost wages to be backdated to the date of the accident. The final date for lodgement is three months from the date of the accident.

Physiotherapy for Knee Meniscal Injuries
Knee meniscus injuries, often referred to as meniscal tears, are a common source of knee pain and discomfort. The knee joint is cushioned by two wedge-shaped pieces of cartilage called menisci, which play a crucial role in stability and shock absorption during movement. However, due to various factors such as sudden twisting, pivoting motions, or degenerative changes over time, the meniscus can become torn, leading to pain, swelling, and limited mobility.
Symptoms:
Individuals with a meniscus tear often experience symptoms such as pain along the joint line, swelling, stiffness, and a sensation of locking or catching in the knee during movement. These symptoms may worsen during activities that involve bending, twisting, or weight-bearing on the affected leg
Causes:
Meniscus tears can occur due to acute trauma, such as a sports injury or a sudden twisting motion of the knee. Additionally, degenerative changes associated with aging or repetitive stress on the knee joint can also contribute to meniscal tears.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosing a meniscus tear typically involves a thorough physical examination by health professionals such as GP’s and Physiotherapist, along with imaging tests such as MRI or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity and location of the tear.
Treatment:
The treatment approach for a meniscus tear depends on several factors, including the type and severity of the tear, as well as the individual’s age, activity level, and overall health. Options may include conservative measures such as rest, ice, elevation, and physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve joint stability. In some cases, minimally invasive procedures like arthroscopic surgery may be recommended to repair or trim the torn meniscus.
Recovery:
Recovery from a meniscus tear varies depending on the severity of the injury and the chosen treatment approach. With proper rest, rehabilitation, and adherence to a personalized treatment plan, many individuals can experience significant improvement in symptoms and return to their usual activities over time. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in restoring range of motion, strength, and function to the knee joint, promoting a successful recovery.
If you’re experiencing symptoms suggestive of a meniscus injury, it’s essential to seek prompt evaluation and treatment from a Physiotherapist. Contact our clinic to schedule an appointment and learn more about our comprehensive approach to managing knee meniscus injuries.
